Defining Songs. Defining Moments.
When we first started dating, my husband and I used to take road trips all of the time. It didn’t matter whether we were driving 10 miles or 100, having the perfect driving music was crucial to the trip.
Before we would hit the road, he used to ask me to pick out CDs for the drive. Looking back, I think that that this was his way of getting to know me. You can really learn a lot about people by their taste in music. I enjoy such a wide range of music genres, I probably came across as bipolar very easygoing.
In any event, I loved being in charge of the musical selection. But, most of all, I loved that the background music was as important to him as it was to me.
Supertramp Classics Volume 9 was playing on our very first road trip – at the very moment when I realized that I had found the one.
To this day, I can listen to that album and fall in love with him all over again – even if I return home to a stack of dirty dishes in the sink, piled next to a clean un-emptied dishwasher.
A few months later, we were in the car heading back from sitting at a lodge and drinking hot chocolate a ski trip. As he was driving, he turned to me and asked, “what would you say is the one song that defines you?”
This remains the single greatest question I had ever been asked.
And 15 years later I still think about it.
So many moments memorialized by music and so many songs defining who we are.
